Built from Memory | Returning Community to the Westway
CSM Foundation Dissertation Project in Architecture & Spatial Design
How does memory inform how we use space?

My design for an events space, a community centre for all, aims to bring people together in an unconventional setting and make the most of a disused space. Lying underneath the Westway overpass in West London, the space educates users of what was lost when the infrastructure was built- as it tore through communities in its path in 1970.
Gathering meaningful objects to create a 'collection of memory', surrounding the space and the people of the past, the collection of items gives memory a physical presence as the personal stories are preserved in time, in the fabric of the build itself.
The shadows cast against these things enhance the interactions that then occur within the space whilst it houses community events, creative showcases and invites the public realm through its doors. The flexibility of function within the space, catered for with the retractable staircase, echoes the changing environment, as the shadows move throughout the day.
