CA.UK.IN Studio Collaboration | Naweni Kindergarten, FIJI
Construction + Design Volunteer | July- August 2019
Travelling to Fiji in 2019 with CAUKIN Studio, I helped to design and construct a primary school building for the Naweni District School.
The new school building was discovered as a necessity due to the rising number of pupils attending the school, with not enough space to tutor them in.

The design was formed from timber clad truss frames paired with two linking bridges, creating an engaging and exciting space for learning and play. The consideration around locally-sourced materials, using polycarbonate cladding to ensure maximum light inside the school building, and large pivot doors account for the educational function and the challenging climate on the Fijian island.

I spent the project living in the Naweni Village, Vanua Levu, whilst building the classroom. There, I developed my understanding of construction processes and the interaction between drawings and building fabrication as they shaped and evolved over the course of the build. Learning more about pine pole foundations, timber fabrication of trusses and rebar construction, whilst surrounded by the rich and inspiring Fijian community, made it a truly enriching project to be a part of.
